Best crypto exchange in India? How to choose in 2026

An honest checklist for choosing a crypto exchange in India: FIU registration, security record, proof of reserves, fees, INR withdrawals, TDS and tax reports.

Search "best crypto exchange in India" and most results are written by the exchanges themselves, or by sites paid to rank them. We don't take referral fees for this page. Instead of a ranking, here's the checklist we'd use ourselves.

1. Is it registered with FIU-IND?

Every platform serving Indian users must register with India's Financial Intelligence Unit. Unregistered offshore exchanges have been blocked. Registration isn't a safety guarantee, but it's the minimum. See how to check FIU registration.

Indian exchanges that have registered include CoinDCX, CoinSwitch, Mudrex, ZebPay and others. Several global exchanges have also registered. Always check the current status yourself.

2. What is its security record?

Look at how the exchange has handled incidents, not just whether it has had any:

  • WazirX lost about $235 million in a July 2024 hack, and users' balances were cut. Recovery has taken years. See WazirX recovery tokens explained.
  • CoinDCX reported a breach of an internal operational account in July 2025, and a further loss of about $16 million from retired wallets in October 2026, after first calling the reports a false alarm. It covered both losses. See what happened.
  • Binance lost about $6.3 billion in October 2026, the largest crypto hack on record, and said it would cover user losses. See what Indian users should know.

Ask: does the exchange use cold storage? Does it publish security audits? How quickly and openly did it communicate during past incidents?

3. Does it publish proof of reserves?

Proof of reserves shows that an exchange holds enough assets to cover customer balances. Prefer exchanges that publish it regularly, ideally verified by a third party, and let you check your own balance is included.

4. What does it really cost?

  • Trading fees: maker and taker fees, which vary by volume.
  • Spreads: on "instant buy" features, the price can be worse than the order book. Compare the final rupee amount, and compare the buy and sell price of the same coin. A wide gap, especially on USDT, is a hidden cost.
  • Account fees: check for monthly, inactivity or subscription fees.
  • Deposit and withdrawal fees: for INR and for crypto withdrawals to your own wallet.
  • TDS: 1% is deducted on sales on every Indian exchange. It's the same everywhere, and you can claim it back. See crypto TDS.

5. How easy is it to get rupees in and out?

Check which deposit methods work, such as UPI, IMPS, NEFT or bank transfer, and read recent user reviews on how fast withdrawals arrive. A platform that makes it hard to withdraw rupees is a warning sign. See how to withdraw crypto to your bank.

6. Are its tax reports any good?

A clean, downloadable annual tax report with every transfer, its cost and its TDS will save you hours when you fill Schedule VDA.

7. Can you withdraw to your own wallet?

If you want to use DeFi, claim airdrops or hold long-term in self-custody, check this before you deposit. Indian users regularly report that some Indian platforms don't offer crypto withdrawals at all, allowing only sales to INR, while others restrict them to certain accounts or charge high withdrawal fees. Read the platform's help pages and test with a small amount.

8. Is support reachable?

Test it before you deposit large amounts. In a crisis, responsive support in India matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to keep crypto on an Indian exchange?

It's convenient, not risk-free. Keep only what you trade on exchanges, and hold the rest in a wallet you control.

Should I use more than one exchange?

Many experienced investors do, to spread risk and compare prices. It means more tax records to combine.

Are offshore exchanges cheaper?

Sometimes, but there's no Indian TDS credit, recourse can be harder, and unregistered ones may be blocked. See foreign exchanges and tax.
