How to set up MetaMask safely: a guide for Indian beginners

1. Install from the official source
Go to metamask.io and follow its link to the browser extension or app store. Fake MetaMask apps and search ads exist, so check the publisher.
2. Create a wallet
Choose "Create a new wallet" and set a strong password. The password only unlocks the app on this device. The seed phrase is what matters.
3. Back up the seed phrase
MetaMask shows 12 words. Write them on paper in order. No screenshots or cloud notes. Anyone with these words can take everything. Full security checklist.
4. Add networks
MetaMask starts on Ethereum. To use Base, Arbitrum or Polygon, add the network from the network's official site or chainlist.org, and check the chain ID. Networks explained.
5. Receive your first funds
Copy your address (starts with 0x). Send a small amount from your exchange first, on the right network. How to move USDC from an exchange.
Common mistakes
- Sending on a network the wallet isn't watching. The funds aren't lost, but you need to add that network to see them.
- Approving unlimited spending for unknown apps. Revoke approvals.
- Trusting "support" in DMs. MetaMask support never DMs you.
