How to buy Bitcoin in India with UPI: a beginner's guide

Step by step: how to buy Bitcoin in India, from choosing an FIU-registered exchange and KYC to depositing rupees by UPI, placing an order and staying safe.

Buying Bitcoin in India takes about 15 minutes once your KYC is approved. Here's the whole process, plus the safety and tax basics most guides skip.

Step 1: choose an exchange

Pick an exchange registered with , India's Financial Intelligence Unit. Check its security record, proof of reserves and how reliably it pays out rupees. Our exchange checklist walks through what to look for.

Step 2: complete KYC

Download the exchange's app or open its website and sign up. You'll usually need:

  • your PAN card,
  • Aadhaar or another address proof,
  • a selfie or video check, and
  • a bank account in your own name.

Approval can take minutes or a day. You must be 18 or older.

Step 3: secure your account

Before you deposit, turn on two-factor authentication using an authenticator app rather than SMS where possible. Set a strong, unique password, and enable withdrawal whitelists if the exchange offers them.

Step 4: deposit rupees

Most Indian exchanges accept INR deposits by UPI, IMPS, NEFT or bank transfer, though which methods are available varies by exchange and can change. Deposit only from a bank account in your own name. Third-party deposits can be rejected or flagged.

Avoid buying from strangers on peer-to-peer platforms. Money from fraud can lead to your bank account being frozen. Read why P2P trades get bank accounts frozen.

Step 5: buy Bitcoin

You'll usually see two ways to buy:

  • Instant buy: simple, but the price may include a spread. Check the final amount of BTC you'll get.
  • Spot market (order book): a market order buys at the best available price; a limit order lets you set your price. Fees are usually lower.

You can buy a fraction of a Bitcoin, for example 0.0001 BTC. Minimum order sizes vary by exchange. Check the live Bitcoin price in INR.

Step 6: decide where to keep it

Leaving Bitcoin on the exchange is convenient, but exchanges can be hacked. For larger, long-term holdings, consider moving it to a self-custody wallet. Withdraw a small test amount first.

Tax: what to expect

  • Buying isn't taxed.
  • Selling or swapping is: 30% on the gain plus 4% cess, and 1% TDS deducted on sales above the yearly threshold.
  • Losses can't be set off.
