What moves crypto prices? The main drivers explained

Why crypto prices rise and fall: interest rates and the dollar, Bitcoin ETF flows, news and regulation, leverage and liquidations, and token unlocks.

1. Global money conditions

When interest rates are low and money is easy, investors tend to take more risk, and crypto often benefits. When rates rise or the dollar strengthens, crypto often falls along with other risky assets.

2. Large flows

US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs, companies buying bitcoin, and large funds can move prices when they buy or sell in size. Can Indians buy Bitcoin ETFs?

3. News, regulation and incidents

Approvals, bans, lawsuits, exchange hacks and outages can move prices within minutes. Indian news, like tax changes or exchange incidents, can also affect the local USDT premium. Policy watch.

4. Leverage and liquidations

Many traders borrow to trade futures. When prices move against them, exchanges close their positions automatically. These liquidations can cascade into very fast drops or spikes.

5. Supply changes

New tokens unlocking for investors or teams, emissions from rewards, and Bitcoin's halving all change how much supply hits the market.

6. Narratives and hype

Especially for smaller coins and memecoins, social media attention can drive prices far from any underlying use.

What this means for you

Short-term moves are hard to predict, even for professionals. Indefi doesn't make price predictions. If you invest, size it so a large drop won't hurt you, and consider a SIP approach instead of timing the market.
