What is a self-custody wallet, and do you need one?

The difference between keeping crypto on an exchange and holding your own keys, how recovery phrases work, and how to decide which is right for you in India.

When you buy crypto on an exchange, the exchange holds it for you. A self-custody wallet works differently: the keys that control your funds live with you, on your phone, in your browser or on a hardware device.

How it works

Every wallet is controlled by a private key. Most wallets show you that key as a recovery phrase, usually 12 or 24 words. Write it down offline and never share it. No genuine support team will ever ask for it.

Types of self-custody wallet

  • Mobile and browser wallets, such as MetaMask, Phantom or Trust Wallet: free and convenient, good for everyday use and DeFi.
  • Hardware wallets, such as Ledger or Trezor: keep keys offline, best for larger long-term holdings.

The 2024 WazirX hack showed why some investors prefer to hold their own keys. See WazirX recovery tokens explained.

When you need one

If you only buy and hold through an Indian exchange, you may not need one yet. To use DeFi, claim airdrops or move funds onchain, you will. See how airdrops work.

Does self-custody change your tax?

No. Moving coins between wallets you own isn't taxable, but selling or swapping is, wherever the coins are held. See the crypto tax guide.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I lose my phone?

Install the wallet on a new device and restore it with your recovery phrase. Without the phrase, the funds are usually lost.

Is a hardware wallet worth it?

For holdings you'd be upset to lose, usually yes. Buy only from the manufacturer or an authorised seller.
