File your crypto ITR.
Everything you need to report crypto in your income tax return, in order. Educational guide, not tax advice.
Time left to the usual ITR due date (31 July)
- 1
Download a statement from every platform
Get the full trade history and any tax or TDS report for the financial year (1 April to 31 March) from each exchange you used, plus records of DEX swaps, airdrops and transfers between your own wallets.
- 2
Check your AIS and Form 26AS
On the income tax portal, open your Annual Information Statement and Form 26AS. Compare the crypto sales and TDS shown there with your exchange statements. Raise feedback on any mismatch before filing.
- 3
Work out each gain
For every sale or swap, take the sale value minus the cost of that lot. Gains are taxed at 30% plus cess; losses can’t be set off. Choose a consistent lot method such as FIFO.
- 4
Choose the right ITR form
Most people with crypto gains use ITR-2. If you have business or professional income, or trade crypto as a business, it’s usually ITR-3.
- 5
Fill Schedule VDA
Enter each transfer: date bought, date sold, cost and sale value. Airdrops and staking received as income go under income from other sources at your slab rate.
- 6
Report foreign holdings in Schedule FA
If you’re resident and held crypto on foreign exchanges or certain foreign platforms during the calendar year, check whether it belongs in Schedule FA. Penalties for missing it can be heavy.
- 7
Claim your TDS and pay any balance
The 1% TDS is credited against your tax. If TDS is more than you owe, you get a refund; if less, pay the balance (with interest if advance tax was short) before filing.
- 8
File, verify and keep records
Submit the return and e-verify it within the allowed time. Keep statements, AIS copies and your workings for several years in case of a notice.

Questions
What is the last date to file ITR with crypto income?
For most individuals whose accounts don’t need an audit, the due date is 31 July after the financial year ends. The government sometimes extends it, so check the income tax portal.
Do I need to file if I only made losses on crypto?
Filing lets you claim back the 1% TDS deducted on your sales. Losses can’t be set off, but reporting them keeps your records consistent with AIS.
Can I file my crypto ITR myself?
Many people do, using exchange statements and the steps on this page. If you traded a lot, used foreign platforms or DeFi, or received a notice, a chartered accountant is worth it.
Where do I find my exchange tax statement?
Most Indian exchanges offer trade history and a tax or TDS report in the app or website account section, often under reports, statements or tax. If you can’t find it, ask the exchange’s support through the official app.
